Emissions Monitoring System

Over 20 years ago, our original emissions monitoring product was designed, developed and manufactured by our in-house team of experts. Over the years, this hasn’t changed with projects still being carried out by the Martek team, but customer expectations and requirements have – with each new sale.

We understand that no customer is the same. Each have their own needs and wants on specific designs. Being accustomed to building multiple systems in our own production facilities means our designs can be flexible to keep up with an ever-evolving industry.

The impact of air pollution from ships is under constant scrutiny from the world’s media and the introduction of the Sulphur 2020 legislation is putting pressure on the industry.

Evolution EMS™ FAQs

Below are our customers’ most common questions about Evolution EMS™ and emissions monitoring. Should you have any other questions, please contact our team directly.

Why is emissions monitoring important for ships?

Emissions monitoring is essential for ships due to several reasons;

Environmental Compliance: Emissions monitoring ensures ships comply with international and regional regulations, such as the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) MARPOL Annex VI. These regulations set limits on pollutants like nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. By monitoring emissions, ships can demonstrate compliance and contribute to environmental protection.

Air Pollution Reduction: Ships significantly contribute to air pollution, particularly in coastal areas and ports. Monitoring emissions allows ship operators to measure and control the release of pollutants, reducing their impact on air quality, human health, and the environment. By actively monitoring emissions, ships can take proactive measures to minimise their ecological footprint.

Climate Change Mitigation: Greenhouse gas emissions, including CO2, contribute to climate change. Ships monitoring their CO2 emissions can assess their carbon footprint and identify areas for improvement. This monitoring supports the industry’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributes to global efforts to mitigate climate change.

Fuel Efficiency Optimisation: Emissions monitoring helps ship operators optimise fuel efficiency. By tracking emissions, operators gain insights into engine performance, fuel consumption, and energy efficiency. This data enables them to identify areas of improvement, implement fuel-saving measures, and enhance overall operational efficiency.

Regulatory Compliance and Reputation Management: Strict enforcement of emissions regulations is becoming the norm in the maritime industry. Ships that fail to comply may face penalties, fines, or even operational restrictions. By investing in emissions monitoring, ship operators demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility, enhance their reputation as responsible stakeholders, and build stronger relationships with regulatory bodies, customers, and the public

How is emissions monitoring enforced?

Emissions monitoring for ships is enforced through international and regional regulations, inspection, and reporting mechanisms. The International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) MARPOL Annex VI (International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships) is the primary international regulatory framework governing ship emissions.

Key aspects of how emissions monitoring is enforced include;

Emission Limits
Emission Control Areas (ECAs)
Fuel Requirements
Monitoring Plans and Reporting
Port State Control
Onboard Recordkeeping

Enforcement of emissions monitoring is a collaborative effort involving flag states, port states, classification societies, and international organisations. Non-compliance with emissions regulations may lead to penalties, fines, vessel detentions, or operational restrictions, depending on the severity of the violation and the applicable regulations.

What are the benefits of emissions monitoring for ship operators?

Emissions monitoring provides ship operators with several benefits, including ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, improving fuel efficiency, optimising vessel performance, enhancing the company’s environmental reputation, and reducing the risk of penalties or fines for non-compliance.

How does Evolution EMS™ ensure accuracy and reliability?

Evolution EMS™ ensures accuracy and reliability through several key features;

Proven NDIR Siemens Analyser Technology: Evolution EMS™ utilises long-term proven NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) Siemens analyser technology. NDIR analysers are renowned for their high accuracy and reliability in measuring gas concentrations. This technology provides consistent and precise measurements of NOx, SOx, and CO2 emissions, even in the harsh marine environment.

Fail-Safe Protection of Sample Handling System: Evolution EMS™ incorporates fail-safe protection mechanisms for the sample handling system. This system is particularly vulnerable to issues in emissions monitoring. The fail-safe design helps prevent malfunctions or disruptions in the sample collection, handling, and delivery processes, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of emission measurements.

Unique 11-Layer Gas Filter Probe with ‘Blow-Back’ Arrangement: The Evolution EMS™ features a unique 11-layer gas filter probe with a ‘blow-back’ arrangement. This design ensures maximum filtration performance and extends the maintenance interval. By effectively filtering out impurities and contaminants, the probe minimises the risk of sensor fouling or inaccurate measurements, enhancing the reliability of emission data.

Unique 4-Stage System Filtration: The Evolution EMS™ incorporates a unique 4-stage filtration system. This system filters the full range of particle sizes, ensuring the trouble-free performance of the analyser over the long term. The system guarantees reliable and consistent emission data by effectively removing particulate matter and other pollutants that can interfere with accurate measurements.

Robust Construction for Marine Environment: Evolution EMS™ is built to withstand the harsh and demanding marine environment. It is constructed using robust materials and components that endure vibrations, temperature variations, and exposure to saltwater and other corrosive elements. This ensures the system’s durability, longevity, and reliable operation under challenging maritime conditions.

Calibration and Maintenance Support: To maintain accuracy and reliability, Evolution EMS™ offers calibration and maintenance support. Regular calibration of sensors and analysers helps ensure accurate measurements over time. Martek provides comprehensive support services, including calibration procedures, maintenance guidelines, and assistance from their expert team, ensuring the ongoing accuracy and reliability of the system.
