Personal Locator Beacons

Your crew has to know they can trust you with their lives. Without that trust and knowing their safety is paramount, it’s unlikely you will retain great staff who want to work hard for you. Everyone knows that a career onboard a ship comes with a multitude of risks and that the overall safety of one’s crew ultimately comes down to having the right planning and equipment for any eventuality.

One piece of equipment, while not legally required outside of the fishing industry, that shouldn’t be overlooked is personal locator beacons.

Don’t rely on luck

Every ship must carry an EPIRB but this does not cover the safety of every man aboard your ship if they get into trouble individually. While there are many things in place to make sure your men are safe, incidents like going overboard, unfortunately, do happen. 90 % of these cases usually happen in calm waters, and even so, fatalities end up being around 50 %. These statistics may be hard to swallow, but this is a grim reality.

The thing is though, it doesn’t to be like this. The stats are so dire because when a man goes overboard, those rescuing are usually relying on luck and hoping they will find the person.

Making sure that every man on board your ship has their own personal locator beacon takes the luck out of the equation and is replaced by innovative technology. This technology allows those searching to find the person as close to a meter to their location. It goes from the equivalent of searching for a needle in a haystack to reading a map leading to the person in distress. Your chances of saving the person increase dramatically.

How do Locator Beacons Work?

PBL’s are so effective as they work using GPS signals rather than through mobile phone signal. This means that you will always be able to send a distress signal out as GPS works via satellite. This takes away any uncertainty about whether you will have a signal through a mobile network if you encounter an emergency.

PBL’s use the international search and rescue satellite system and when a distress signal is activated the signal gets sent through this system and then bounced back down to the appropriate Rescue Coordination Center. Rescue teams can then be deployed to their exact location.

Don’t compromise on safety

We know you don’t compromise on the safety of your crew and neither do we. With our focus on ship safety, performance and crew welfare we can’t help but disrupt the industry with forward-thinking technology designed to save lives. We go beyond the basics of what is ‘required by law’ and deliver technology that gives you the highest standards in crew safety. Let Martek marine help you become industry leaders in crew welfare and ultimately their performance.
